The Greatest Round Ever...?

A while ago, Kru Jen posted an epic round of famous boxers Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti.

A similar round in Muay Thai can be seen in this fight between two Thai legends: Sakmongkol Sitchuchoke and Jonganan Fairtex.

I've posted this fight before, but this round itself distills all the action and heart into its deepest essence.

What you see in this clip isn't the most technical fight, but a display of raw
energy and desire to win.

PS. If you think you've seen elbows, you haven't seen this clip.

Real Power comes from Knowledge

We are all in some ways a student preferring one of the three major styles of learning:

Kinesthetic (feeling), Auditory (hearing), Visual (seeing)

However, while we may gravitate to one style, we must not forget the others.

One of the best ways to improve is to know your personal technique: to be knowledgeable about its shortcomings, its strengths, and how it compares to others.

Many beginners tend to neglect fully utilizing the visual method. Watching your instructors, your seniors, professional fighters are all great ways to learn a technique.

The best way, though, to understand your technique is to use the mirrors and shadowbox. Shadowbox in different angles in the mirror to gain different perspectives.

Am I extending my arm enough? Am I leaning on my punches?

These are all questions that can be answered, and problems that can be fixed, simply by being diligent with shadowboxing. Be aware, shadowbox with purpose, and be busy. Don't just zone out and move.

It'll give you an edge over the average guy who is just "going through the motions" in the mirror

Bad boys fight in China this weekend. The card was all under professional Sanda rules I believe, although they modified it so that Thai fighters could use elbows (hence the elbow pads).

More Thai pads, less Pad Thai

Hey all,
One thing I think is important is to understand WHY you do what you do in training. Every school has their own reasons for doing or not doing something.

Here is a little insight into the pad work we do in class, for those of you that don't know.

Pads is technical training. It's the best technical training because you've got an interactive human target and you can hit as hard as you can.

It's because of this, you need to start at about 60% max power (get a feel for your partner and your own technique), but then you need to be going full power once you are in the zone.

Muay Thai weapons are designed to be thrown with intent, and in a real situation that is how your technique would come out anyway. So, pad work is the most important part of your class in terms of working technique. If you don't use the proper power, you won't be learning the extent of your technique.

Imagine getting in the ring having never hit the pads properly. How will your technique come out? You'll probably be both messy and tired, since you aren't used to going full tilt.

* a side note: proper full power doesn't mean being tense. It means being relaxed and letting your strikes go. Think about letting a rubber band fly, as opposed to throwing it in frustration (you can use all the muscle you want, it's less efficient to throw the band than it is to pull and fling it).

If you are making mistakes during pads: it's your partner's job to remind you about a hand dropping or anything else. It's also your instructor's job to come and feed you tips in increments while you hit pads. Keep hitting the pads with proper power and fix your technique according to the advice being given to you as you go along. Avoid wasting too much time. Work and correct as you go.

If there are glaring issues that can be fixed right away, your instructor will slow you down and go over them.

This will translate into partner-cross fighting drills. When you can hit the pads with proper technique and power, you'll be able to throw controlled techniques on your partner without compromising proper form. Many people don't want to hurt their partner in drills and end up using bad form when they do so. This is usually because they haven't properly worked the technique enough on pads/bags to control it yet.

Bag work is similar. The bag allows you to go as hard as you can and is a great tool in the absence of a pad holder for many different drills and exercises.

Watch your seniors or even videos of Thai's hitting pads/bags. They let their technique go and breathe out deeply with each strike.

Aaaand that's it. Keep in mind other schools may have different philosophies for their training, but this is ours.

Pinto was a replacement fighter for Watson's original opponent in this fight.

Edson Mendes Barboza Jr: Muay Thai in MMA

Patrick introduced me to a fighter named Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. from Brazil.

He currently fights MMA with a record of 7 wins and 0 losses: 6 KO's and 1 submission.

Alone, that record would seem impressive. However, he also has a 28 fight Muay Thai career at 25 wins, with 22 by KO.

What's really nice to see is that his standup game is clearly Muay Thai. Not K-1, not kickboxing, not karate, not Sanshou and NOT "MMA muay thai" (whatever that is).... it's Muay Thai.

He also isn't a fighter who simply trained Muay Thai. He has been training BJJ extensively. He has shown up to the MMA party with a lot of MT experience, but a well rounded game over all. I think it's for these reasons you're going to really see him rise up.

This is a point I've been arguing for a while: the future of MMA is going to see a move back to the traditional. The best fighters are the ones who study each discipline they are involved in specifically and intensively.

GSP and Anderson are examples of this. They are both well versed in different disciplines by training in them separately...not simply getting an MMA striking coach or grappling coach. YES, they do have teams that bring it all together, but they still get their skills by training with the best of each world. A non Muay Thai example would be GSP wrestling with the Olympic wrestling team.

These guys go to specialists of their craft to train...then they bring it all together by smartly choosing how and when to use their techniques. It's by having the most complete skill set possible that fighters like Edson are able to succeed in my opinion.

I'm definitely going to be watching him now.

Anyways...here is Edson in action: http://www.mmalinker.com/external/frames/36508/Edson_Barboza_vs_Mike_Lullo_FIGHT_VIDEO_UFC_123_PRELIM_HQ

You want it? Go get it

Read: http://mindofmayshus.blogspot.com/2010/11/so-its-no-surprise-that-ufc-and-mmas.html

Bodman does an interview on his friend and fellow gym member Steve's blog. I wanted to share it mainly because he outlines the difficulties in balancing his training with everything else. He has lately been in the gym as early as 7am or as late as 11pm; usually because his work situation doesn't allow him any other time to train.

If he can do what he's been setting out to do...you can too.

I've trained with Bodman for 2 years, and I even remember teaching his introductory class. I watched him improve. I watched him take months off because of school too, and play catch up for it. Yet he came back and has been grinding ever since.

You've got a lot of other fighters or simply just students at our gym that exemplify this work ethic. Just look up at the fighter's board or the "student of the month" nominees. They're all regular people. They have commitments, they enjoy a night out or are trying to establish careers. However, they know where they want to be in Muay thai, and how good they want to get.

Whatever badmon or these other people end up doing is totally up in the air. Who knows if we'll see the next champion or teacher out of anyone. For now, you have several examples of people MAKING time to reach their goals.

Want abs? Make time to run. Want a better kick? Make time to hit the bag outside of class.

Whatever you set out to do...it's possible. Make your dreams a priority today.

Champions of Champions on G4 TV

For those of you with access to G4, they have a show called Champions of Champions. It airs the championship fights from Jamaica this past year as well as fights from the King's Cup tournament.

They will be airing this year's tournament on PPV as well. If you didn't know, the King's cup is a pretty big deal. Some of the best names in Muay Thai will be competing.

For more info: http://coc-elite.com/

For some previews and Muay Thai related videos, visit: http://community.coc-elite.com/videos/Default.aspx

The Other Guy

It's easy to get caught up in comparisons. If you know you're better than the "other guy", you probably won't have to bring it up too often. Your performance will speak for itself most of the time, or you'll hear it through other people's compliments.

Sometimes though, the "other guy" will be more advantaged, and can afford more opportunities than you can seem to get. Maybe the "other guy" will get easier fights, or have no life commitments to get in the way of training.

It's easy to look at these people and say you deserve more recognition than they do.

But what are you DOING now? What have you been doing and how much of that lines up with what you SAY you've been doing?

Perhaps you aren't seeing someone who deserves less than you get rewarded.
Perhaps you are actually seeing someone surpass you.

Don't be fooled.

Keep a strong and honest spirit.

Meethee Kiatpratoom vs Pentai Sitnoomnoi (video)

A Rajadamernern fight that has a beautiful and technical beginning, followed by a decisive end.

Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-G32W2jjLY&feature=sub
-------------------------------------------

Spoiler

Far be it from me to critique such high level fighters, but I always feel like there is something to be learned from them. This looks like KO due to a range error. Meethee threw a kick when Pentai was in punching range. It's a solid reminder about the importance of choosing your weapons. Even the best fighters can make these split second mistakes that another can capitalize off of.

Unfortunately, Patrick's opponent had to pull out due to a last minute travel issue.

Leo came away with a decision win

Durst fought a great battle but lossed a decision.

Zhang gave his opponent a standing-8 and then went on to take the decision

Also victorious was Andrew Poon from Kru Jay's camp Victory Muay Thai! He stopped his opponent with hard leg kicks.

A big thank you to:

Buakaw, Bovy and Souwer all a part of S-Cup 2010 Tournament

Buakaw Por Pramuk and the legendary Thai scrapper Bovy Sor Udomson will be fighting in a big shoot boxing tournament that also features Andy Souwer.

Shoot boxing is different from Muay Thai, but there are similarities and the Thais seem to make a decent transition from the rule and scoring sets (unlike in K-1).

I'm pretty sure Bovy's prime competitive weight is not at the 70kg mark (Buakaw and Souwer fight at this weight)...but we'll see if he can pull off a win. Bovy has the soul of a monster and can put anyone to sleep when he's having a good day.

I've introduced Petchmongkong before, and now he fights Vitaly Gurkov
