For the love of the Game!

Amateur athlete: "a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons."

Amateurs are the lifeblood of Muay Thai here in Ontario. Without any prize money to be won, it is a labour of love every time these guys/girls step up to the ring.

Some may just try out the sport as a chance to see what they've got, other use it as a stepping stone to eventually become a professional. Whatever the reason, we need to support our amateurs!! Particularly in our province, amateurs are at a pretty high level of skill and always put on exciting shows.

Come out on Saturday May 10th to York Muay Thai's 5th Anniversary Party and see some live exhibition bouts between amateurs from the top Muay Thai gyms in Ontario!  These exhibitions are meant to display what Muay Thai is to the crowd and give amateurs the opportunity to move safely around in the ring without it being a full out fight. Be there to show your appreciation :)

Eakpracha vs Albert Kraus (Glory) video

Here is an interesting fight featuring a lot of knees. This fight is under Glory World Series Kickboxing rules, which is different from Muay Thai. To summarize, elbows and clinching are prohibted, as are throws and catch kicks. You are allowed to knee, but if you do you can only grab and throw one at a time. You must release your opponent and grab again to throw another knee.

It's always interesting to see Thai fighters adapt to this rule set, just to see what weapons and defenses they are able to execute when their options are limited. Buakaw is an example of a traditional style Thai fighter who adapted well to Glory/K-1 style rules, though it took him some time. Eakpracha makes his debut under these rules in the fight.

Sangmanee Sor Tienpo Highlights... elbows and knees!

Here's a great highlight of a current competitor in the Thai circuits. It's a nice bridge from last month to this month because a lot of Sangmanee's clips here are elbows or knee strikes, or transitions of both. Also, the instrumental is classic. Enjoy!
